Families expressing concern over schools pressure of TE students to accept and deposit sooner than May 1

Families expressing concern over schools pressure of TE students to accept and deposit sooner than May 1.

Tuition Exchange member institutions that are also member institutions of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), agree to allow regular decision admission accepted applicants have until May 1 to accept their admission and institutionally-affiliated aid and scholarships offers. TE Central has heard from students and their families who have been offered TES that some institutions are expecting the TE student to deposit and accept TES sooner than the May 1 date. Although TE Central does not dictate how TE member institutions administer their admission, financial aid, and TE programs, remind all NACAC TE member schools, that TE institutions are administering their programs and adhering to the 2015 NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practices (SPGP) as stated:

“Permit first-year candidates for fall admission to choose among offers of admission and institutionally-affiliated financial aid and scholarships until May 1, and state this deadline explicitly in their offers of admission.” Additionally, “effective for the 2017 admission cycle” the NACAC member institution will “not establish policies nor engage in practices whose effect is to manipulate commitments prior to May 1.”

TE Central understands the desire to confirm commitments of enrollment and recognize there may be other students on your TE wait lists, but it is expected that accepted students will be given the appropriate amount of time to make the critical decision of where they will attend college. There is nothing that prohibits communication with students to determine the likelihood of enrollment, but the student should not be “required” to make a decision sooner than the generally accepted candidates’ reply date of May 1.

Not sure if your school is a member of NACAC, please visit with your Director of Admissions or Enrollment Manager.  Thank you!
